hey gents, just was wondering, if the bootsector of server 2008 r2, is different than the bootsector of server 2008?

i ask because, there is a software i like to use, that would work on server 2008 a couple years ago, but now with r2, i cant get it to work. the software depends on a compatible bootsector which server 2008 had, but apparently r2 doesn't. i figured if anyone would know, it would be you guys ;)

thanks in advance

Glad you got it working. May I ask which software in particular you are using? I was just curious...maybe it would be something I might even be interested in using myself.

Windows 7 is an advancement of the Vista kernel and not an entirely new one so I wouldnt see how they are that much different. The BIOS initializes the MBR of the disk to detect if operating system exists, then the boot manager phase determines whether the machine should be resumed or launch the OS for first time...finally the bootloader determines which operating system to load based on the users preference. It also contains the NTLDR for legacy OS such as XP/2000.

Vista works pretty much the same way. The only difference is the boot sector of Windows 7 is located on the "System Reserved" partition while in Vista is located on the same partition on as OS.
