Description
The Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSAT) is a module of Microsoft Windows Vista which measures various performance characteristics and capabilities of the hardware it is running on and reports them as a Windows Experience Index (WEI) score, a number between 1.0 and 7.9 for Windows 7. The WEI is due to increase its maximum score with future updates. The WEI includes five subscores: processor, memory, 2D graphics, 3D graphics, and disk; the basescore is equal to the lowest of the subscores.

I've done some testing on this already, just haven't had time to post my results yet. The problem you are going to run into is when you attempt to run a complete ("winsat.exe formal") test it will fail on the media/video playback portion stating it does not have the required codecs to play back the HD mpeg2 and H.264 files. I have copied everything over from the Win7 x64 Windows\Performance directory that it needs and this is where I am stuck. I have tried porting the codecs from Win7 as they are included there by default but so far have had no luck getting media player to recognize that they are installed. Simply registering the dll's does not do it. I will post everything I have so far sometime soon though.

As you can see it does not complete.
This is from a successful run in a Win7 x64 virtual machine:

Does anyone have any news on this issue?

Regards.

You can use this WinSAT-like app.
It works perfect, the only problem is that the free version of this app is limited to 32bit only (there are both 64bit and 32bit versions of this app in the installer, but 64bit doesn't work in free version) and 1 CPU core.

I know, this is a workaround, not solution...

I understand that5 the formal tests don't work. However, i worked around it by running each test separately. It may be more work, but once i ran winSAT, all the fancy aero effects worked properly.

Original Topic :: http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=542
My Download :: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=09QP36TE

I followed the original topic closely, and worked up a brief but detailed readme on how to get as far as I currently am. I have gotten copies of the required files from recent Windows 7 installations (both x64 and x86), and have adapted the instructions put forth from the original topic.

Runinng the "WinSAT formal" command using:
  • Windows Vista files (Max. rating of 5.9) will output a proper XML file.
  • Windows 7 files (Maximum rating of 7.9) will not output a proper XML file.

In order to have the Windows 7 files output an XML file, you cannot use "winsat formal", and you must add the switch, "-xml <filename>", to the end of the command.

I tried many other sites for information regarding this feature in Windows Server 2008, but you guys are the only ones who have ever come close. I hope we can have this feature working again. I will gladly write up a C# Install kit for this if we ever finish it.

To be blunt, I joined to finish what I had learned here, and am unable to make new topics in the "Wishlist" section for R2. I will post it somewhere else, as I wish to get the computer rating going.
I merged your topic into this topic in the Wish List as WinSAT is used to calculate the Windows Experience Index (WEI).

You can try to use my tool from the following topic to find out which registry keys are needed for the several files used by WinSAT.exe and the Performance Center: Feedback - Class Enumerator. Files that I can think of now are: PerfCenterCPL.dll, WinSAT.exe and WinSATAPI.dll but I'm sure there are more of these which you can find out using Sysinternals Process Monitor and/or Dependency Walker.

Hope this gives you any clues! :)

If we could get eMD(the readyboost service) running on R2, then we'd have one part of the problem fixed. That would leave the codecs not installed.
