Isn't Windows Embedded for thin clients and other types of devices?

Can you even install it on a regular computer?

I remember a couple of years ago when I had a thin client in my office that I worked on, it had XP on it and it was pretty basic.

If you can install it on a regular computer, what kind of benefits would there be over the regular Windows 7 which Embedded 2011 Standard seems to be based on?

We are talking about using it on a regular computer right?

Interesting stuff, aviv00! Thanks for posting! :)

That's also what I thought, but it turns out that it is a Windows version that is fully customizable! I think this is the Windows we could all dream of: every Windows component can be chosen whether you want it to be installed or not! :)

Here are screens I took from the installation (not in order, will fix that later; have an appointment now): http://img209.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=w ... 11ctp2.png

You should try it in a Virtual Machine too! :geek:

Whoah.......That looks pretty awesome Arris, Ok I'm officially convinced that you can use it as a regular OS.

Well it really sounds like a dream to configure everything the way you like it and want it, pretty much what I do everytime I install an OS afterwards.

As the Microsoft :geek: I am I'm probably pretty soon will get the itch to try this out, I can feel it...not long now...

Once again, Microsoft can never get their facts straight when I ask them a question. ;)

Dear Microsoft,

1) Can you install WES on a laptop, in a dual-boot configuration?

2) Can you install WES in Microsoft Virtual PC?

Microsoft wrote:
Windows Embedded Standard is a suite of tools sold to OEMs that allow them to build custom versions of the operating system for their devices. It is for use with a single-purpose device (like an ATM machine or a Kiosk) – in other words it cannot be installed and used as a multi-purpose PC.

I had asked them this before because Windows Embedded Standard caught my eye. I wasn't going to download it if I couldn't use it in VMWare or anything, but if you say it works, then I'm definetely going to try it! :)

Haha, I'm curious what they mean with a "multi-purpose PC"! ;) You should definitely try it! :)

That's for sure! We chose Windows Server because it is a very tiny and clean Windows version by default, and people can add the features needed themselves. With Windows Embedded it is possible to start with almost nothing and choose all features you want during the setup.

Shame on us we never looked at this Windows version before! ;)

If you don't use BitLocker/EFS you can also remove
  • Bitlocker Secure Startup
  • Encrypted File System (EFS)
You can't get it much smaller without losing essential parts I think.

This afternoon I also cooked some Windows Embedded which started up, but for some reason the Task Manager was missing, and also gadgets that view the CPU/Memory usage didn't work so I think I did remove too much!
