hi !

Security-programs for W8

there are a few antivirus-programs that work on W8, some are listed by Microsoft on their webbsite,
but there are probably also other programs.

I know that W8 has MSE built-in renamed to windows defender, but it´s a bit restricted.
fx you can´t select when you want to run a scheduled scan...
Also, one thing is VERY annoying, there is NO taskbar-icon for Defender, which can give you the impression that it have stopped working....

It has been reported that MSE doesn´t work, not even v4-beta.
I tried to install Forefront EndPoint Security 2010 (FEP), but the installer refused to install on W8.
I then downloaded the next version of Forefront, which is now called Security Center 2012 Endpoint Protection (SCEP).
It´s a release candidate but i installed it without any complaints about W8.
The latest version was recently released, so i suspected that it would run on W8.
But before you go ahead and try to find it, a small warning: the whole download is 1,4 GB (GIGABYTE !).

The Antivirus-program itself (the client) is only 18 MB, but you have to download the whole Security Center 2012 Endpoint Protection , and then extract the Antivirus-program from the exe-file.

I´m wondering if it would be ok to upload that installer to fx. skydrive and make it publiclly avialable ?
Since Security Center 2012 Endpoint Protection (RC) is freely available for everyone to download from M$, it shouldn´t be a problem.
That would save everyone from having to download 1,4 GB....

It´s a 180-days free trial, so it will last for a while...
Open the file with fx. 7-zip, and go to \SMSSETUP\CLIENT\, then extract SCEPInstall.exe

SCEP: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/system-center/endpoint-protection-2012.aspx

Emsisoft Antimalware (EAM) also seems to be working: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/

WinPatrol works: http://winpatrol.com/

If you're serious about security, you should probably look to another OS as the attack surface for Windows 8/Server 2012 is considerably larger then Windows 7/Server 2008R2 -- even industry Pundits like the McAfee Weenies that butter their bread on the limitations of the Windows products are expressing guarded concern...

Download from here
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/ ... rity.shtml ,
then extract all the files. Inside the ”SMSSETUP” there is a folder called ”Client”, in there there is the installer to a version of Microsoft Security Essentials (aka Windows Defender in Windows 8) compatible with Windows Server 2012, labeled System Center Endpoint Protection 2012. It is almost identical with the usual MSE, with some minor, I assume nonesignificant things. I advise you to keep the whole archive, if you plan to install it later on the PC or on a different PC, not just the ”Client” folder, so that the antivirus is able to register to Windows Update, to get automatic updates. Otherwise, it seems you will not be able not just to get updates from Windows Update, but neither from the program itself, you will need to download them manualy from the Microsoft website.
Before discovering this, I tested several security solutions, there is another one that works, UnThreat antivirus free
http://www.unthreat.com/
But I discovered that the PC performance is somewhat affected by this antivirus, so I prefer SCEP (MSE).
I also strongly recomand another antivirus, that does not have full time protection, but wich is very usefull in removing malware that allready infected the PC

why download from softpedia ?
it can be dangerous to download software from such downloading-sites !

i suggest you download directly from Microsoft instead: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/system-center/default.aspx

there is a 180-days trial that you can get there.

SCEP inside the iso-file is identical to the retail-version, i checked their SHA1-checksums with winhex, so if you have already downloaded the trial, you don´t need to download the retail-version.
that saves a lot of bandwith, time and maybe money...

The license given by Softpedia is „Freeware”, not „Trial”. I prefered to get from there then from Microsoft, on MSDN/TechNet, because I could download a few hundred mb, not something that could come more then 1 or 2 gb, as it was downloading from Microsoft, only a pack, not a multitude of packs that can mess up a limited or small size partition. And, anyway, you do not have to install the whole pack, on some computers it will even refuse to install. You only need to go to the folder I specified and install what is there, not the whole thing you downloaded.
Softpedia is a well-known, established and trustworthy website. It is not some obscure site that can re-pack or infect the downloads with malware, no Megaupload or whatever... It is probably the best index of free downloads in the world. Besides that, it removes downloads that are infected with any type of malware or thoose who push things over to the end user. For example, Nero BurnLite 10 forced the user to install the Nero Ask Toolbar, mandatory for the install, but not for the use of the software. Softpedia refused to list the download, because it removed the possiblity of choice, because installing of the toolbar was no longer optional. When Nero removed this, in thier new Nero Kwik Media that replaced Nero BurnLite, this download was listed again. For me, Softpedia is a respectable sourse of information and links.

Well, for Windows 8 itself the antivirus is included, in Windows Defender, what I gave you is just a version of it that works for Windows Server 2012. It has no point to install it on a standard Windows 8 version, because it has Windows Defender included as a full functioning antivirus, not just antispyware like in previous Windows editions. What I have discovered, the System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection, brings this antivirus to Windows Server 2012 as well.
