I had a XP-Server 2003 dual boot on my older machine. (stopped using the machine more than a year ago). In one sentence - Server 2003 is to XP what Server 2008 is to Vista. Just that Server 2003 has no feature to enable "XP looks", so it essentially looked like XP in its classic look.

Performance - Server 2003 was lightning fast on my hardware (at that time, a P4 2.4GHz processor, 512MB ram and Intel D865GBF motherboard). Network speeds somehow spiked up on Server 2003, and it consistently scored better than XP on all my tests.

Standard problems with some software installers were common, but screw Norton if it doesn't want to run on Sever 2003. Server 2003 was a little stiff to configure though, and there were not many guides on using Server 2003 for workstations.
