Heya! So..... i've been drawn back to the 2008 Workstation project, and have decided to switch out Windows 7 for Server 2008 R2 once again... hopefully I can lend a hand with some of the hot topics going on!

Anywho, I made the following comments in other threads in the past day/two and decided to move them here for a bit of a re-introduction, why I'm back... what I'd likee to help out with, etc... just to keep my slightly off-topic chat to the Open Topic subforum here and to give some of the people here who don't know me an idea of what I hope to help with... :)

JonusC, in reply to casual conversation with Arris in the 'List of Antivirus/Security Applications (x86)' thread, originally wrote:
Aha yeah, I do miss the tweaking and fiddling I will admit... you might remember me saying a while ago that I was working on a website of my own, it's become a full time thing... I'm doing a Web Design course and at the same time developing Web Programs... I plan to unleash my pride and joy when we hit 2010, and I will probably feature the Win2008Workstation community and maybe get back into it ;)

Sorry to go off topic there, feel free to clean up these posts Arris if you feel it necessary :) While I'm on that note though, my e-mail notifications direct me to a https:// version of the domain here, but the certificate appears to be expired or invalid - I had to manually change it to a standard http. Might want to look into that, it could confuse a lot of your thread subscribers!

JonusC, in reply to AsciiWolf's work on SuperFetch for 2008 R2, originally wrote:
Heya AsciiWolf,

Much respect for working on this - I remember taking a look at trying to get this going back in the day, but without much luck! I think, your work here has interested me greatly to get back to 2008 R2 Server instead of Windows 7... maybe I can help out a little bit... :P

You have probably seen it already, but perhaps the work I did on implementing ReadyBoost in 2008 [R1] over here (which I'm still amazed with myself  ) might give some ideas - I know it's not R2, but ReadyBoost is closely tied with Superfetch after all - and it's got all that Registry data about the Services and System Boot drivers and whatnot...

...regardless, I'm pretty sure you know what you're doing :)

...that's it, I'm installing 2008 R2 now. I'm bored and have the weekend off so... :D

I'm not trying to be bigheaded, I hope I don't sound that way  but I do have a point in saying all that, which is...

What did I miss???? What's the hot topics going on lately? Anything crazy happen while I was gone?

Cheers guys, and hello and greetings to everyone on the boards :)

Not much... Just a few people coming on here asking why we are using a server OS instead of windows 7. Dude, Why are those people even on here questioning us using a server ON A SERVER FORUM!? They say we should just use windows 7 and "save the work" or something like that LOLz. This confuses the hell out of me. Do they have a high curiosity? Becuase they are not wording it correctly.

It is annoying when my co-workers bring up windows 7 becuase I am tired of everyone at my work asking me why I use a server OS and I try to explain to them, they get cross eyed and make a "huh" face about it. It cracks me up all the time. The minute I talk about superfetch and windows system resource manager they look at me as if I were speaking japanese! Now here's something odd... I explained what it was to my mom (witch almost never gets me) about superfetch (she has Vista x32 Home premium on an acer dual core laptop) and I only had to explain it to her ONCE and she figured it out (and she is normally technically declined, but has ben making great improvements) when I have to tell co-workers like 10 times before they get it and they are "seasoned" computer experts. I guess ego can go a long way! LOLz!

it's 2009 and there are some people who can't even turn on a computer! it scares the crap out of me!

My thought's on that is that they are either "noobs" (ignorant PC users who are indeed curious, looking for solid advice on the benefits of using a hacked Server OS over the consumer-targeted equivalent), or they are sneaky auditors keeping an eye on the community for illegal activity. Probably the former.

When people ask me, I keep it simple.... Something like this - "Well, a Server version of Windows is designed to power hundreds or even thousands of computers in a company building, where it's unacceptable for any sort of downtime or room-for-error - having technology like that right on your home workstation just makes sense if you're serious about keeping things smooth, safe and reliable". Just off the top of my head there, it's friday night and I'm into the scotch

Said "seasoned" computer experts are probably just tainted by their own biased opinions... not trying to sound like an ass with that, it's a sad truth that 90% of experts are tied down by fundamental education or old-fashioned linear thinking. It's the case with pretty much any industry... do you mind if I ask, are you a Westerner (living in a 'White' country)? Because usually it's Caucasians who are the most biased in that regard lol (and no I'm not racist in one bit, well maybe self-racist a little... I am white Australian and most of us are idiots haha)

Anywho, yeah in regards to your project, hope it goes well man - there's no rush for anything, we're all busy and we gotta work before play after all :D

Well Arris and myself use the forums with SSL (https://) so I would assume that Arris didn't change notification e-mails to not use SSL links. Firefox accepts the certificate the first time and it doesn't bother you again, but IE bugs you everytime. When we post links on the forums, we use the [localurl] tag so any user, on SSL or not, will open links in their security level.

Example:

Code:
[localurl=viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1088]Your Topic[/localurl]

Would turn out to look like this:

Your Topic

For non-SSL, the link would link you to:

http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1088

But for SSL would, the link would link you to:

https://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1088

The reason why the Certificate is showing up as invalid is because the certificate is signed to Arris' host, not the Win2008[R2]Workstation.com or something like that, Arris should be able to explain it better ;)

Welcome back to the forums anyways.

Yeah I know what you mean xxcom, but I mean the E-Mail subscription notifications have secure HTTP protocol on the URL's that point to the topic update. And i'm a normal member, so I would safely assume that all other members also get secure http addresses. When I open it and see the intimidating "WARNING - GET ME OUT OF HERE!" message from Firefox (lol) it could be worrying to those not as technically proficient as us!

But then again, if it does scare them they probably shouldn't be hacking around with Server OS's anyway

I have a rough idea what you mean about the technicals - I use IMAP+SSL in my E-Mail client directly from the domain name that I own, and I have to tell Shredder client to 'Allow anyway' because the Cert. matches my webhosts' DNS instead of my own domain (something like g801.hostgator.com instead of sonus-online.net). I think, in my case, it's because the Domain Registrar I registered with was not the same company as my webhost, and there is additional configuration I have to do on my Registrar to propagate the cert. authentication transparently through....

Ah well, just thought i'd bring it up is all. Here's a screenshot of the cheky error anyway, just for your and Arris' reference.

The srv010082.webreus.nl you see in that dialogue box is Arris' host which is where the certificate is issued to. For me I just added exceptions for https://win2008workstation.com/ (R2 one is optional) and I don't see that message anymore, but I do know what you mean when users who do not have that much knowledge see that message they may start freaking out.

If you reply to this, I can see what URL it sends me, probably the HTTPS one. Arris will probably look at this soon and fix it though.

Yeah, I've seen it before is all - I remember being freaked out by the Firefox alert when I first saw it, and was like "what the? has this forum been infected or reported as malicious!?!?" so yeah... I know it's not a major concern, but is indeed worth checking out.

Well I just got notified of that reply and it wasn't https

The E-Mail notification I just received wrote:

Arris does a lot silently, sometimes I see that he hasn't logged in for a week but magically spammers got banned during that time. ;)

Hahaha that's quite hilarious! I know what it's like, I encounter similar things between my "boss" over at CompoJoom.com - sometimes I go away for a few days and come back and find he's gone ahead and fixed a bug or implemented a feature that I added to the repository and assigned to myself, even though he hasn't been online the entire time...

...it's a strange strange world in the interwebs, most of us tend to work silently because it's too much of a time waster making idle conversation or pleasantries - after all, there are more important things than baseballs and whatnot, there's much work to do - to make things more decent! @ JonusC->I am based in the USA (unfortunately-wish I was in japan!) and yesh there are way more fanbois here and it is so irritating. polarised just like politics, when I look at things from a neutral standpoint. I just realise there is good and bad in everything and just point it out. The fanbois hate me and so do the haters. LOLz to the whole thing.
