I would like to say 1GB would be the minimum amount of RAM you'd want to run 2008 on without any disk thrashing issues or simple multitasking. Just recently I formatted my laptop and made Backtrack 4 my primary operating system for penetration testing needs. I am studying for Information Systems Security and I felt it was necessary on my behalf to learn Backtrack 4 Linux as its a very powerful tool. Nothing against Microsoft it is my preferred day-to-day OS but this Backtrack OS just blows Microsoft out of the water. I cannot tell you how many exploits I have discovered in IE and Windows Explorer alone that allow me root access to Windows systems using a utility called Metasploit. I have been able to hack WEP-encrypted wireless networks with ease while WPA2 is a bit trickier though I have been able to succeed once with somebody who had a weak password (it was 1234567890) hahaha. I was like NO WAY..what idiots haha
