  1. Hibernation Support!
Can’t get it working in Server 2008 x64

Arris: Maybe the topic Standby / Hibernate can help you, but if you are using Hyper-V, hibernation is not possible because Hyper-V doesn’t support it yet.

  2. First, thanks to the admin for this awesome site. I’ve followed all the steps to install Win 2k8 in VMware – It’s amazing! :D
I’d like to change the login screen background. I don’t like that dark green color, it’s too awful. It would be great if it was possible to change it like Vista, with the Aurora background.
I’ve read about a program (LoginStudio by Stardock) but in my machine it doesn’t work. If some of you guys knows how to change it manually, I appreciate to share with me that info.

    Thanks.

  3. Please add Windows DVD Maker to the list. I download Windows Movie Maker: http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=219. When I try to run Windows DVD Maker, I get the error: MPEG-2 encoder is missing To use Windows DVD Maker, compatible MPEG-2 video encoding software must be installed on your computer.

  4. Hi all,
please add a tutorial/how too for: get internet access from server 2008 over another system like XP/Vista/S2k3 – thx alot
my own problem: i try since now 2 days the following scenario:
    server 2008 datacenter 32bit -> a gigabit networkcard -> a gibabit switch all autonogiate -> 100mbit card -> WindowsXP/S2k3 -> internet per AVM FritzBox Modem Router!!

with all other systems wxp/s2k3 i dont have any problems to do this
i get also with s2k8 the free folders from the other system but NO internet access – all is in the same WORKGROUP and also all IP’s in same AREA…

i feel me, a cow have bonged my – crazy and unhappy

PS: all system have no problems with internet connection alone works great, but i need sometime this above written way for tests/repairs of systems – thx for a answer

Arris: There should be no difference between win2k3/xp/win2k8 clients; they all should try to get an ip address using DHCP. Are you sure you haven’t set the ip address/gateway/dns at the other pc’s manually? If you are using an other pc as gateway like:

    srv2k8 | winXP | Client 3
       |          |          |
         \ GigabitSwitch /
                    |
        Gateway Computer
                    |
                Modem
                    |
               Internet

You have to go to Network Connections in the Control Panel of the Gateway Computer, open the Properties of the Internet Connection, go to the Sharing tab and enable the Checkbox. This will set the ip of the networkinterface connected to the gigabitswitch to a static one and enable a DHCP server on the Gateway Computer. The clients on the other side of the switch will now automatically get an ip address and other information to get onto the internet!

  5. Hyper-V
I would really appreciate your expertise here
Does anybody know how to add custom resolutions on VMs on hyper-v?
I am using a laptop for testing and I can’t find a way to adjust the screen resolution to anything but the standard 4:3 formats
and since the laptop’s screen is wide all i get is a windowed virtual machine
and no way to scale it fullscreen
been googling but found nothing, anybody knows how to set a widescreen resolution on VMs?

Also, I’ve been trying to enable wireless on the VM
    I’ve seen these workarounds:
    http://sqlblog.com/blogs/john_paul_cook/archive/2008/03/23/using-wireless-with-hyper-v.aspx
    http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/01/09/using-hyper-v-with-a-wireless-network-adapter.aspx
but the problem is the network router uses static IPs for the machines
so my box has a manually configured IP like 192.168.10.xxx and the DNS IPs of the ISP are also manually added
I’ve tried both methods (ICS and RRAS) but the VM is assigned a different class IP 169.254.xxx.xxx so it is unable to connect to the router or internet
regardless of the settings I’ve tried (different IPs, DNS IPs,router IP as DNS etc)
has anybody figured out how to set up wireless connections for VM with static IPs?

Finally, I surely hope the RTM edition of hyper-v will be able to support power states, I really do miss hibernation on my laptop
    thanx in advance
    keep up the great work

  6. Add Connect to a Network Projector to the list.

  7. Phoneix – about your Dreamscene comment…this does work on Server 08, you need to install a free MPEG-2 Decoder at http://www.free-codecs.com and then install the free Deskscapes pack at http://www.stardock.com/products/deskscapes/downloads.asp

Im hoping someone can sort the System Restore function which is sadley lacking, I nearly screwed my system earlier trying to patch the uxtheme.dll file to install custome theme’s (Windows Seven)…if anyone gets in trouble doing this and cannot boot into Server 08 without Sys Restore follow this..Boot into safe mode (No icons will show..just black screen) press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select task manager, go up to file and select “New Task” type cmd, then “chkdsk” this will start on next boot, then type “sfc /scannow” to replace system files that have been corrupted, boot the system wait for the checkdisk to finish…and your in…took me hours to figure that as there was no info on the net…basically said if you screwed your uxtheme.dll file on 08 …your screwed….not so people ;-)

  8. I just posted this one in the Application section of the forums but I’m really disappointed Microsoft didn’t include the ability to use Media Sharing in WMP11. No way out of the box to share media to another computer or Xbox 360 :(

  9. Garret, if you want media sharing use Tversity, it has been updated for support for Vista and Server 2008 and I use it quite often as I have loads of media.

  10. 1. Thanks for this great site! I have found a lot of useful information.
    2. Dumb question: I’d like to get the Windows Experience Index / Windows System Assessment Tool working in Windows 2008. Copied winsat.exe to system32. But I only get the xml output. Doy you know if there is a way to get the “graphical” output, or to read the XML “friendly”?

    Cheers.

  11. This website is great. Thank you for publishing all this.

    One change and one request:

REQUEST: Enable the Windows Vista ALT-TAB Preview window (so you can see the contents of the screen rather than an icon)

CHANGE: The instructions would leave you to believe you can install Windows, then perform these steps. This is not always the case. For example, I tried for two hours trying to install wireless then realized that I should step ahead to the tweaks and enable wireless, then complete my install.

    Thanks!

Arris: Thanks for your feedback! The preview window when pressing Alt+Tab should be automatically be shown when you use the Vista Aero color scheme (step 9 of the Themes page). Your suggestion to set ‘Enable Wireless’ as step two is more logical indeed, so I changed the order of the pages. Thanks for your suggestions!

  12. hey! i’ve found an alternative to Media Center, and it’s free!
the Origami Experience Pack can be used to play your media in a similar fashion, but there is no TV support.

    read more here: http://www.redmondpie.com/using-origami-as-a-free-alternate-to-windows-media-center/

Arris: Thanks for your comment, I added it as workaround to the forum topic! :)

  13. FWIW, I tried Anon’s regsrv32 DVD decoder suggestions, but they do not work. Also, I couldn’t get kstvtune.ax to register :/ .

  14. Please to wish list:
    install Windows Live Applications

    :-)

Arris: Haven’t you looked under the Additional Information title at the Main Page? If you look in the ‘Useful forum Topics’ line you see how to install Windows Live Applications! ;)

  15. Editing Start Up & Shut Down Screens & Colors

Server 2003 offered editable registry entries under the key:

    CODE[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Colors

That allowed you to change your boot screen and even menu colors; editing colors here doesn’t effect the load and shutdown screen in Server 2008…

Some have suggested that the boot screen assets are in binary boot files similar to Vista, but looking at the various candidates like “winlogon.exe” and “winload.exe.mui” don’t appear to have the appropriate assets or entries…

While primarily an aesthetic issue (it’s nice to be able to have congruent boot colors with your desktop); being able to edit load screen colors has a modest practical benefit for those that use CRT’s as it puts a bit less wear and tear on vulnerable fly-back transformers by avoiding the surges in gain that happen from full field color changes at boot — a particularly vulnerable time lot of people also power up their CRT and PC at the same time when the CRT PSU is sagging which makes matters worse…

Anyone have a clue how or where to go to edit the load and shutdown screen colors or assets?

    =O)

  16. I wish SAS 9.0 could be run in win2008 x64, so that I can do my statistics homework in my desktop.

Arris: There is a topic about this at the forum.

  17. Come on guys, we need media center!!!!

  18. Does that mean windows server 2008 cannot run windows media player and other players?
I got a free cd key from microsoft, and I would like to build a media center with windows server 2008 for dowloading musics, movies and play them on HD tv.

  19. Custom Vista-like logon screen? DO WANT

  20. Quentin Server 2008 has its own media player 11 but you need to follow instructions to install Desktop expierience and it will be install, the only feature it doesnt have is the ability to stream to media servers like the xbox 360 etc.

  21. I think this qualifies as a wishlist item because I don’t think it’s currently possible:

Does anyone have hardware acceleration working for playing h.264 video? I know I don’t and despite my opteron 180 and Geforce 8600 I still cant play certain files contained in a .mkv without severe choppiness or AV sync loss.

  22. How about the suspend and hibernate power saving options?

  23. I would like to know how to do the following:

    1. Make the shortcut arrow smaller without messing up other links/programs. I’ve read a few way but they all seem have side affects.

    2. Put drive letters before the labels. “ShowDriveLettersFirst”=1 key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ does not work. I have tried numbers 1-4 in dword and qword and no dice.

    3. Make “Computer” the first icon when arranging by name, like tweakui does in xp.

In general a reliable tweakui like app would be really be handy.

Arris: I won’t add this to the Wishlist because it’s more like a little problem. However you can make a topic about this at the Win2008Workstation Forum.

  24. I think a PDF would be good, since i dont have internet in my apartment to look up if fail.

Btw thx for this tut ;)

  25. Second Startup: This says it all, but the 20 second start up is just to the login screen. ,

  26. 32 bit color for running Second life
